You don’t need to be an expert writer to submit your list. Just need to have reasonably good English (of a native speaker) and maybe a sense of humour. Your list also should be about something unusual or interesting.

Rules for your List

There are some rules that you need to follow while writing your list:

  • Your list should have minimum 10 items per list
  • Your list should be at least one or two paragraphs per entry
  • You MUST have a PayPal account – they will pay you ONLY through PayPal. So, if you don’t have one, create an account here.
  • The list should be your own. You cant pick it from somewhere on the net and submit it, so make sure you’re submitting something you’ve written yourself.
  • This is not fiction writing. Make sure you’re writing facts that can be verified.
  • Therefore, you also need to link to reputable sources so that they can verify the facts of what you’re saying.
  • ListVerse publishes only original articles. They will not post infographics, slideshows, or “re-blogged” content, so be careful about what you submit
  • When you write your list, you don’t need to add any images or videos. The ListVerse team will add appropriate images and/or videos to complement your article.

Before you start, take 5 minutes to go through the Listverse Author Guide that will give you more details on what is expected of your article/list. It will help and won’t leave you wondering why your list got rejected even though you thought you’d done a great job on it.

How to write a Good List

Here are some tips on how to write a good list.

1. Choose the Right Topic

Choose a subject or topic for your top 10 list that will really make it stand out amongst the rest. How do you come up with something better than what the others are doing? One of the best ways is to  answer a question. What questions are your readers or customers asking? Start there. The possibilities will be endless.

2. Include Humour

Keep the tone light and even humorous if you can. A top 10 list is a good place to bring in some humour because people usually aren’t looking for a very serious and detailed article – just for a quick answer.

3. Captivating Headlines

Once you’ve got your topic, write a headline that will grab your readers’ attention the first time. If your headlines fails, your list fails, no matter how great it is. A strong, catchy headline is vital.

4. Format the content well

Make your subheadings stand out on separate lines. Bold them. Use a larger font that the paragraph text or use a different colour, or both. This increases readability. Have you noted, how in this post, each subheadline is bolded, with a larger font size than the rest of the article and a different colour? This gives extra emphasis to each of your points and guides the reader to directly go to sections they are interested in. If you are using a normal editor for your post, you can do these very easily by giving heading tags like H1, H2, H3 etc to your headings and sub-headings.

5. Images

Readers love images. The phrase “An image speaks a 100 words” might be over used but every word is true. However add relevant images and not ones that have no connection with your list. Check out the site BuzzFeed – it combines lists with pictures in a very captivating way. You could take some leads from there.

So now I hope you have enough steam to get started on your lists. Let me know how it goes, what did you make your list about? Did your list get accepted? My readers would love to know everything!
